This album is a big one for me. When I first found it (mid 90s) I was working at a CD store. Nobody knew what “tubeway army” was so it never sold. It wasn’t filed with the Pleasure Principle and other Numan works. Anyway, I took a chance and was immediately drawn into the deep story and the lore. It painted incredible pictures in my head as I imagined (I may be misremembering these details) Friends (robotic companions that don’t have names, but only go by numbers), Machmen, ZomZom’s, and the horrors of The Park. I was lucky to get to see Numan in a small club around 2000. He was in full industrial/punk mode and it was a hell of a show. I had never seen the video you posted…THANK YOU for sharing that amazing performance, and for your very interesting write up.
I love that! Gary seemed to understand the world that was coming. Cool to see how he's evolved as an artist since the Tubeway Army days. He's more animated onstage these days than in the video
It would be hard for him to be less animated than in that video! 😉 I’m not knocking it though! I used to work at a video rental store as well, and we had a Gary Numan concert video which blew my mind. I haven’t seen it in years, but I believe it is this one: https://archive.org/details/TheVistaGroup-GaryNumanTheTouringPrinciple79NTSC1981
